On 7th October 1958, the then President of Pakistan, Iskander Mirza abrogated the 1956 constitution and imposed martial law in the country. Shortly after this, on 27th October of the same year, the then Commander-in-Chief of Pakistan army General Ayub Khan deposed President Iskander Mirza and himself became the chief martial law administrator.

On 7 February 1960, President Ayub Khan appointed a commission to draft the future political framework of the country. The commission was headed by Muhammad Shahabuddin, former Chief Justice of Pakistan.

President Ayub Khan promulgated the new constitution on 1st March 1962 which came into effect on 8th June 1962. The constitution had 250 articles.
