India Gate is located in New Delhi, the capital city of India. It is a war memorial which was originally named as All India War Memorial. It was built in 1921 by Sir Edwin Lutyen.
India Gate contains the following text.
“To the dead of the Indian Armies who fell and are honoured in France and Flanders Mesopotamia and Persia East Africa Gallipoli and elsewhere in the Near and the Far East and in sacred memory also of those whose names are here recorded and who fell in India on the North West Frontier and during Third Afghan War”
The names of some 13,300 British Indian Army Soldiers and UK officials are also inscribed on the gate. The gate is a memorial to 70,000 British Indian Army Soldiers who died in First World War, in France, Mesopotamia, in Persia and in Third Anglo-Afghan War.
