What is difference between Umrah and Hajj?
Umrah and Hajj are the two types of Islamic worship in which pilgrims visit Mecca, the holiest city of Muslim world and perform some rituals. Though both Umrah and Hajj looks similar but there are differences between the two which have been discussed in detail in below paragraphs.
Category Of Umrah and Hajj Worship
Hajj being one of the basic pillars of Islam is an obligatory worship. It is mandatory on every adult both physically and fiscally fit Muslim to visit Mecca and perform Hajj at least once in lifetime.
Umrah on the other hand is Sunnah. It is not as compulsory worship as Hajj is but still its performance bears an important status in Islamic worships.
Time Of Performance
Hajj has a specific time framework for its performance. It can be performed in the last month of Islamic calendar. It begins on 8th Dhul al Hijjah and ended on 12th Dhul Hijjah. Hajj can be performed only in these days.
Umrah on the other hand is free of all such restrictions. Unlike Hajj it can be performed at any time of the year. There is no time limitation in Umrah performance.
Reward Of Umrah and Hajj
Umrah is also known as Hajj e Asghar or Minro Hajj. This is because it bears less reward as compared to Hajj. Hajj has more value in Islamic worships on the basis of being Fifth pillar of Islam.
Rituals and Steps
Both Hajj and Umrah have similar steps and rituals except that in Hajj, pilgrims have to perform extra rituals than in Umrah. In Hajj, pilgrims are required to perform rites like Stay at Arafat, Mina and Muzdalifa and stoning the Devils and animal sacrifice.
